‘Sky’s in Pine’ is home to some of the most beautiful and unique furniture on the market. Like all things on our podcast we knew there was a story behind the shop and we sit down with the namesake and master craftsman of the shop Ron ‘Sky’ Davidson. We were lucky enough to spend time with Sky to hear the why behind the shop and how these unique furnitures pieces came to be. Enjoy this conversation and stop by Sky’s next time on your trip to Pine. Special Guest: Ron Davidson.

If you’ve driven the 87 through Pine you’ve likely seen the sign for ‘The Honey Stand’. And if you made the decision to stop and browse the delicious selection of honey and other delectable treats you certainly weren’t disappointed. As you would guess ‘The Honey Stand’ has honey of all shapes and sizes but honey isn’t the only thing they carry. They also have some delicious fresh salsas, jam’s, jellies, bee pollen and butters to name a few. We’ve been customers of the stand and we’re interested in the history of the building and why Pine Arizona. We we’re delighted that Robert Fuller was willing to share with us the history of the stand which extends well beyond its Honey Stand days and started in a different location then where it sits today. So enjoy this conversation with Robert and be sure to say hi during your next visit to Pine. Special Guest: Robert Fuller.

When you think delicious wood fired pizza you may not think Pine, Arizona. After spending some time with Chef Mike Dahling you should. Chef Mike Dahling along with his wife Jessie own and operate Old County Inn, Pinewood Tavern and Pine Provisions Delicatessen and Bottle Shop located in Pine, Arizona. Old County was their first restaurant in Pine and the pizza is among the best in Arizona, which is no stranger to great pizza. Arizona regularly has names among the best pizza in the country and Old County certainly holds their own. We would know as we ate there twice during our most recent overnight visit to Strawberry - Pine. Enjoy this episode with Mike and make sure and say hi during your next visit to Pine.
The best thing about this podcast is the opportunity to meet new friends and hear the why behind their story. This was certainly true with our new friends Terry and Rick from Pine Creek Canyon Lavender Farm in Pine, Arizona. The restorations that Terry and Rick have made to the historic property preserved the legacy of the original homestead all while repurposing the ground for something unique and refreshing. In addition to the wonderful scent we learned of the many uses and types of lavender that all exist on the farm. Why lavender? Why Pine? All these questions and more are answered during our time with Terry. Enjoy this episode and be sure to stop by during your next visit to Pine - Strawberry, just follow the wonderful scent!
Special Guest: Terry Gorton.

We’re back! After the last couple of years we’ve all had, we deserve to get back out on the road and I can’t think of a much better place for that adventure to start than at the Strawberry Inn. We had the pleasure of chatting with owner Amber Eilers after our stay at the Inn in mid September. Located off highway 87 in the beautiful pines of the Arizona rim country sits the Strawberry Inn. This beautiful boutique hotel is as unique and inviting as the landscape around it. Through our travels through the rim country we’ve heard great things about the inn and it did not disappoint. Each room is unique in its decor and features and all look out onto the beautiful courtyard complete with tables and yard games. Our room was comfortable and had plenty of room for our overnight visit to the town. The main property is just a piece of the hospitality that the Inn offers in town. You can also experience the unique feel of the inn through the private cabins, tiny cottages or airstreams. All uniquely Strawberry.
As always this wouldn't be possible without out awesome sponsors. Please be sure to visit and support all guests and sponsors! Special Guest: Amber Eilers.

We were lucky enough to be able to enjoy some great beer and conversation with Dennis Arnold. Dennis and his wife founded Arizona's oldest brewery Barrio Brewing Co. (https://barriobrewing.com) Even though we just met Dennis that evening it felt as though we were catching up with an old friend. The friendly atmosphere is felt through Barrio’s employees and the building itself. In fact, Dennis designed the bar to have enough area that he would have room to stand and enjoy drink and conversation with his customers. The word barrio means neighborhood and Barrio Brewing Co. has embraced that idea fully. Earlier this year Dennis made good on the idea to make Barrio Brewing 100% employee owned. It was his way of giving back to his community of individuals who helped build Barrio into what it is today. So when in Tucson be sure to stop by and enjoy some delicious food, beer and conversation. Cheers!
Special Guest: Dennis Arnold.

We had the great joy of experiencing the VIP - Behind the scenes tour guided by Dean himself. It’s truly the best way to get the full experience of the park. We recorded over 3 hours of content on site but due to audio quality and other issues were limited in what we could bring to the episode. Out of Africa is not another zoo where you simply stroll around the park and stare at animals in their habitats rather its a place where you can truly interact and experience the animals. Located an hour north of the Phoenix valley its a quick trip and an experience that you will remember for your lifetime. Make sure to visit and say hi to our friend Pilgrim the Giraffe. If he likes you as much as he did Rob he may just give you a sloppy wet kiss. Special Guest: Dean Harrison.

Is it possible to have too much of a good thing? If you’ve been to any of The Haunted Group restaurants you know the answer is no. We have yet to find a Haunted Group restaurant concept that we have not loved. The same is also true for this episode which we had the pleasure of welcoming two guests. We met Author Roger Naylor for breakfast along with his good friend and co-founder of The Haunted Group Eric Jurisin. The food and drink at Crema in old town Cottonwood was not the only memorable thing had this morning. We had the pleasure of chatting with both Eric and Roger for the better part of an hour. Eric shared some of the background of The Haunted Group and why they choose the Verde Valley for their restaurants. The question of what ghosts inhabit the ‘Haunted Hamburger’, restaurant which is featured in Roger Naylor's book ‘Boots and Burgers’, is answered. Enjoy the conversation and make sure you say hi next time your in Cottonwood and Jerome. Special Guests: Eric Jurisin and Roger Naylor.

Sponsored By:

Michelle Gallegos - Realtor

MLR Professional Tax Services

We had the privilege of attending the TicketGuardian 500, now known as the FanShield 500, in March of 2019 as a guest of Protecht to document his amazing story. FanShield is created by fans for fans and nothing could be more evident by the hospitality they provided in making the whole experience possible.
Laboratories are facilities that allow research, experiments or measurements to be performed. Arcosanti is an Urban Laboratory located in central Arizona. Paolo Soleri started the project with an idea to demonstrate an alternative to urban sprawl. It's an attempt to show how a city can develop and thrive within the beauty and landscape around it. Tim Bell, Director of Communications at Arcosanti, shares the vision of and the continued work that is being done at Arcosanti. We recorded on site amongst the beautiful backdrop of the structures and landscape that Arcosanti calls home. It's truly a beautiful facility that needs to be experienced in person to fully appreciate. Its a short drive north on the Interstate 17 and worthy of your time and support. We were also lucky enough to be able to interview an Italian pianist who was playing that evening. Enjoy! Special Guest: Tim Bell.

All aboard! We were lucky enough to ride one of the last 'Starlight Tours' of the season. Departing from Clarkdale, AZ aboard the wonderfully refurbished train cars, we traveled through the beautiful Arizona scenery that is the Verde Canyon. The 'Starlight Tour' leaves in late afternoon shortly before sundown. It allows plenty of time to take in the striking scenery around you on the way out from the depot. The return trip takes you back to a simpler time where the stars shined brighter unfazed by city lights. The Verde Canyon Railroad has different theme rides throughout the year that all people can enjoy. Before our ride we were able to spend time with Ellen Roberts from the railroad. We had a great time talking with Ellen while she told us a little about her history and that of the Verde Canyon Railroad. Everything was recorded on the train as you can tell by the train soundtrack heard throughout the episode. This is just a small snippet of the amazing time we had on the three hour tour. You'll have to make the short 1.5 hour trip north of Phoenix and experience this one for yourself. With Christmas coming up you won't want to miss the 'Magical Christmas Journey' where you are magically transported to the North Pole. Enjoy! Special Guest: Ellen Roberts.

We had the pleasure of spending the evening with some folks who share the same love and passion for the state and community we call home. We ventured to The Churchill in downtown Phoenix, part of the Roosevelt Row art district that our friends from Season 3 The FOUND:RE hotel, Fair Trade Cafe and The Nash jazz club call home. The Churchill is uniquely Phoenix and is comprised of recycled commercial shipping containers housing many small businesses. One of those small businesses is State Forty Eight in which we had the pleasure of catching up with our friend and co-founder of SFE Mike Spangenberg. This is a special night for Mike, Stephen, Nicholas and the rest of their brand as they, along with local credit union OneAZ, celebrate the release of the State Forty Eight credit card. We love seeing local business succeed and are happy to share this quick update with Mike. Don’t forgot to check out our conversation (https://www.notsonativepodcast.com/sfe) with Mike from Season 3 for the story behind the brand. Cheers!

We kick off Season 4 with a bang! We had the honor and pleasure of spending the day with Roger Naylor. Roger is writer whose work can be found in his many books, The Arizona Republic, and state publications. After breakfast at Crema, one of The Haunted Groups many delicious Cottonwood restaurants, we travel to Dead Horse Ranch State Park just a few minutes from Old Town Cottonwood. Rather than attempting to write about the man who makes a living doing just that, enjoy our conversation with Roger and be sure to pick his works which can all be found on his website www.rogernaylor.com. Enjoy!

We sit down for food, drink and conversation at Red's Bar and Grill located at the Wigwam Resort in Litchfield Park. Reds has become the regular stop for each of our season’s final episodes. Next time you stop at Reds, make sure you ask for our new friend Rhianna who took great care of us! Season 3 brought with it some great guests and stories from all corners of the Valley. One meal is not nearly enough time to share all that we loved about this past season. We simply scrape the surface and highlight each episode from this past season. Thanks to all the guests that spent time with us this season and of course thanks to our great season sponsors MLR Pro Tax Service and Credit Union West for making this possible. Both are great local businesses that love the state and community they serve. Be sure to check out our sponsors and all our great guests from this season. Cheers!

In this weeks episode, the final before our recap, we had the pleasure of taking a personal tour of the Rosson House at Heritage Square in downtown Phoenix. Heritage Square is home to renown restaurants such as Pizzeria Bianco and Nobuo at Teeter House, right next door to the Arizona Science Center. When you think of Phoenix often images of cowboys, cacti and rattlesnakes come to mind. Rarely would one associate the Victorian Era with Phoenix, a trip through the Rosson House will change that belief. Many of us natives have seen the fancy house on the corner on the way to the science center. Katie Delahoyde - Museum Interpreter and Jennifer Hance - Director of Education provide the history and give life to this old fancy house. It's a big house with bigger character, noises and even ghosts? You’ll have to listen and visit to find out whether it has supernatural inhabitants. Enjoy this episode and guided tour through the Rosson House museum and be sure to stop in to experience for yourself. Also if you’re looking for a night out be sure to check out their event page. ‘Victorian Secrets’ is much more than a night at the museum and worth of a date night or girls night out. Enjoy. Special Guests: Jennifer Hance and Katie Delahoyde.

“Go Ahead, touch it” I know this is an awkward title for a podcast, but it is not every day an artist suggests you touch his paintings. At most art exhibits you’d admire the beauty of the work with your eyes. Hugo’s exhibit also appeals to our other senses. Rob had the opportunity to interview valley artist Hugo Medina following his recent art exhibit at the Arizona Capital Museum. Hugo’s work can be seen throughout the Valley including several murals in downtown Phoenix. One of these murals a tribute to Wallace and Ladmo. Wallace and Ladmo were staples of the children’s television scene in Phoenix for decades. Ladmo bag anyone?
Medina uses many different mediums in his paintings, including metal shavings. He discusses how he pre-treats his canvases before he paints them. This is why Hugo encourages you to “touch” his paintings and feel the depth and texture in them.
Listen along as Hugo discusses his life and work and is perspective on art, and art in the Phoenix area!
Thank you Hugo Medina for your contributions to the art world and to this podcast! Special Guest: Hugo Medina.

State Forty Eight is more than just a t-shirt company, it’s a movement recognized around and beyond the state it calls home. Started in 2013 by Michael, Stephen and Nicholas the brand was born from their love and appreciation for Arizona. They are a brand dedicated to bringing quality clothing for all, inspired by Arizona. As you gather from its name, State Forty Eight takes pride on its Arizona roots. Whether it is our states colors, animals, sports franchises or flag you’ll find it integrated into their products. Mike and his pup Tillman were gracious enough to spend some time with us on a Saturday morning at their newly opened Chandler headquarters. During our time together he shared his story of what desires and passions led him and his business partners to create the brand. Through their entrepreneurial spirt and hard work they have taken the brand from a boutique clothing line to a movement beloved by Arizona’s athletes, politicians, charities, businesses and anyone proud to call Arizona home. You’ll recognize the logo at professional sporting events such as the Arizona Diamondbacks, Phoenix Suns or Arizona Coyotes to major charitable organizations like Susan G. Komen, American Cancer Society and the Arians Family Foundation to name a few. Enjoy this conversation with Mike and hear the story behind the brand.

Rob along with our special guest host from LocalFirst AZ Kendall Jones enjoy a cup of coffee with Stephanie Vasquez at her Fair Trade Coffee shop on Roosevelt Row in Phoenix Arizona. At Fair Trade ‘coffee with a conscience’ is not simply a phrase or a marketing piece rather its a way of life. Stephanie is a former education and after some travels she felt led to open a coffee shop. A shop that focuses on the fair trade of coffee beans, organic ingredients and quality above all else. The shop is located in the downtown Phoenix Roosevelt Arts District and upon entering the shop you’ll be greeted by the sweet aroma of organic coffee and your eyes will be graced with the wonderful works of local AZ artists. Fair Trade holds a rotating art gallery supporting local up and coming artists which are all a part of the shops desire to support and build the local community. Their conversation started on the patio among the backdrop of passing automobiles and light rail train cars. The summer heat then moved them inside where you’ll hear the workings of a bustling coffee shop. Enjoy this conversation with Stephanie and be sure to make the trip downtown for a cup of coffee and community. Special Guests: Kendall Jones and Stephanie Vasquez.

This weeks episode was spent with Burtney at the beautiful and unique FOUND:RE Hotel Phoenix. You may think that you need to go to LA or New York to experience a true ‘art hotel’ but you’d be wrong. This boutique hotel is located in downtown Phoenix just off the Central and Roosevelt light rail station. It holds a uniquely Arizona feel that draws its inspiration from the Roosevelt art district it resides in. We had the pleasure of spending time with catering sales manager Julie Whyman and art curator Michael Oleskow. Both have been with the hotel since its inception and took time with us to tell the story and vision of the FOUND:RE hotel. The hotels desire is for its guests to ‘find yourself’ while on property. You can be found through the delicious food and drink at MATCH, the modern and inviting rooms, and of course the beautiful art throughout the entire property. The attention to detail throughout the resort is evident and you’ll notice that even the bathrooms, conference space, and storage rooms all have names uniquely FOUND:RE. Even the room numbers are custom designed and unique to each room. Mike has done a marvelous job of accumulating and displaying art with each piece being sourced from an Arizona artist. This supports not only the beauty of the hotel but also the local art scene and economy. Plus, if you happen to find an art piece that you ‘find yourself’ in Mike will arrange a personal meeting with the artist and accommodate a purchase of the art so you can display it at home. Whether you’re looking for the next spot for a night out, staycation, or vacation in Phoenix you would be remiss if you did not ‘find yourself’ at the FOUND:RE Hotel. Special Guests: Julie Whyman and Michael Oleskow.

This weeks episode is full of murder, mystery, and mischief all dating back to Arizona’s territorial times. We met up with our new friend Mike Bell at Majerle’s Sports Grill in downtown Phoenix. What he shared with us was the completion of his research on the colorful and fascinating past of the historic Fry Building that Thunder Dan’s namesake restaurant calls home. It's a true wild west story that tells the tale of a woman that journeyed to Arizona for a new life and through some savvy business dealings and ‘relationships’ she wound up being one of the state’s largest landowners. At the time of her passing Governor George W.P Hunt ordered flags state wide to be lowered to half-mast in recognition of her contributions to Arizona. Enjoy this episode about the true wild west beginnings of Phoenix.
Also, check out Mikes four part series for more of the gritty details and intrigue of the Fry Building here: The Fry Building: A Hidden Pioneer History (https://statelibraryofarizona.wordpress.com/2019/07/17/the-fry-building-a-hidden-pioneer-history-part-i/) Special Guest: Mike Bell.

Improvisation is defined as creating something not previously planned or scripted. The idea of improvising is evident throughout and is one of the bedrocks of jazz music. The Nash jazz venue provides 300 shows a year in which you can experience the musical expression that all can appreciate, born out of improvising. The clubs namesake is Arizona native Lewis Nash, a celebrated jazz musician. The Nash motto is ‘Jazz Happens Here’, this was obvious from the moment we walked through the door. From the decor and stage lighting, to the artwork of famous jazz artists adorning the walls, all tell the story of jazz. Executive Director of Jazz in Az Joel Goldenthal was kind enough to share his personal story and the mission and vision of The Nash. They aim to build a community that experiences, learns, and shares the art and culture of jazz. On any given night you’ll find people of different ages, backgrounds and even political affiliations all coming together to enjoy the art form of jazz. Jazz is an experience and The Nash is evidence that you do not need to travel to New Orleans or New York to obtain this experience rather ‘Jazz Happens Here’ on Roosevelt row in Phoenix, Arizona.
We recorded on site at the venue and do not own any music played. Special Guests: Alice Tatum, Joel Goldenthal, and Nicole Pesce.

In this episode we travel all the way to north Peoria where we enjoy wine and cigars on Robs back porch. We spend the time sharing what motivated us to start the podcast and what we’ve learned throughout this inaugural season. We also share some of our favorite moments spent with our guests and experiences we’ve shared. Now one cigar and a bottle of wine does does not provide enough time to share all the experiences we gained throughout the season, we simply scratched the surface. We also share a small preview of things we can expect for season 2 where we ask you as the listeners to get involved and provide feedback on what you want to hear about. We thank you for coming along on this journey with us and hope to provide you with entertainment and education in the seasons to come.

In this weeks episode we tour the Litchfield Park Historical Society Museum located on the grounds of the former Litchfield mansion. Judy Cook, who is a board member and caretaker of the museum, guides us through the many exhibits that tell the origin stories of Litchfield Park, Goodyear and the surrounding areas. Judy expands upon many of the stories we heard last week about the founding of the Wigwam and how they have impacted the rest of the surrounding community. Goodyear and Litchfield Park may have started with the Goodyear Tire and Rubber cotton fields but have grown exponentially since. From aerospace engineering firms that assisted with war effort and would later turn into a major employer for the city, to the development of the Wigwam resort corridor, and ultimately to the major residential areas that have followed in recent decades, all started with the cotton fields. If you’re a student of history and enjoy hearing of the correlation within the West Valley you’ll enjoy this episode. Special Guest: Judy Cook.

In this episode of the Not So Native Podcast we sit down with Emmy winner (yes that Emmy) and Arizona native Ryan Whitten who is the owner, founder, and head brewer of 8-Bit Aleworks. Ryan along with his wife Krystina opened 8-Bit in May of 2015 in Avondale, Arizona. 8-Bit is not just another hipster craft brewery complete with beard oil and handlebar mustaches (side note: if either one of us could grow facial hair worthy of beard oil we would gladly partake) rather it comes from a time before Playstation and Xbox, a simpler time with fewer buttons. The 8-Bit name is inspired by the classic Nintendo Entertainment System games like Super Mario Brothers and the like. The decor throughout the tasting room and even the tap handles are all inspired by these classic video games. Each table in the tasting room is complete with its own game system you can enjoy while you sit back and partake in some of their fine and unique brews. Our conversation with Ryan touches on what led him and his wife to create 8-Bit, what makes them and their beers unique, and why they’ve become beloved by the locals. Enjoy! Special Guest: Ryan Whitten.
